Hell's Highway

Operation Market Garden was a daring plan to capture a series of bridges over the main rivers of German-occupied Netherlands and thus allow a rapid advance into Northern Germany. Operation Garden, the dash along Highway 69 to relieve the airborne drops of Operation Market that were to seize the bridges, was spearheaded by the British Guards Armoured Division of XXX Corps. Stiff German resistance along both flanks of the advance earned Highway 69 the nickname of 'Hell's Highway'for each yard of XXX Corps advance was measured in blood.
